I'm going to upgrade the video card on my family rig to hopefully run vista, or at least run my flight sim x better.
It's using a GeForce 2 Pro, which I was using when I first started gaming with SoF, but it's obviously had it's day and needs upgrading.
It's an AGP slot, and I was just curious between the differences in the two slots.
It's going to need more RAM too, so it's not going to be a cheap upgrade, but luckily if I remember correctly, there was one more expansion slot for ram in there.
any thoughts/opinions?
original specs: Intel Pentium 4 1.8GHz (256KB), 128MB, 60GB 7200RPM IDE HDD, PCI Microtower (4x5), nVidia GEForce2 GTS Pro/TVout 64MB 4X AGP, 16X DVD-ROM, 16X10X40X CD-RW, 56K modem, Intel 10/100 Ethernet, IEEE 1394, Windows XP Home
only upgrade was 512 RAM stick.

AGP cards are now being phased out. All new motherboards are using PCIExpress.
You cannot use a PCIe cards in an AGP slot. you cannot use a PCIe card in a old standard PCI slot either.
You will be looking a for a new AGP card for that system... If you buy another NVidia card you can easily upgrade it without worrying about drivers, just stick the new card in and update the drivers if needed.

vista = 2 gig o ram for full experience
nvidia card ... get the last agp card ya can ..and no the top of the line is not where to look
just find good fast AGP card that has decent bandwidth

also up-grade that cpu ..and your memory .. but really buy a new system
pci express is supposed to be faster .. it does support more bandwidth .. but direct x 10 is not supported on the AGP cards
i have listed
again your limited not only by ddr 1 ram but AGP and also chipset ,(on the motherboard) as well as even operating system
since most of the new cpu's are supporting 64 bit support
again that only counts if you have a 64 bit operating system as well as 64 bit supported games

thanks for the help. i knew they weren't interchangeable , I just wanted to know the difference. the reason I'm upgrading is I'd rather spend 300 max and have a good system that could run vista, but more than likely just for my flight sim x rather than buying a whole new system where with the specs that I want will cost me 3000
what about the difference between AGP 4x and 8x?

bubba is correct you will need an AGP *8x motherboard to support an 8 X AGP vid card
bottom line ..on your old system stay away from VISTA
use XP pro
upgrade your mem
and vid card and max out that system .. but do not buy a new system thinking a premade HP /comcrap..err i mean compaq will run vista well ithout alot of ram ... a 256 meg vid card and at least get a SATA hardisk
