i've got a dell laptop with a go 7800 in it and was pissed that nvidia hasnt updated the driver for a year. every new driver was incompatible, well it turns out that each new nvidia driver can support all their cards but they restrict them via the .inf file to only support their current cards
assholes.
so i found a couple websites that can write you a new .inf file and show you how to extract the drivers and replace the ini and get the latest drivers to work with your card.
older desktop cards are sometimes affected like this as well, so if you cannot get the latest nvidia drivers to install for your card check these sites out

I have an 8800gts so this doesn't really effect me but it makes me mad because I know how lame Drivers can be.
So what are the performance differences like? Or does it just fix like general/specific errors in different apps?

Wish I'd remembered this thread a month ago!!
Tired this under Vista Ultimate (32-bit) with my Dell Latitude D610/ATI X300...works like a charm. Noticed a big difference in Mech Commander 'n such. This tool does support ATI chips, though you should verify your chip is on the list for the OS.

Thanks for reminding me Hell...one note, there are no ATI drivers for notebooks. Oddly, I mistakenly used the X300 DESKTOP driver...and it worked great. Even took part of the system memory to make it even more functional.
Went back to XP, standard laptop drivers....UGH. SLOW.
