I've had it with ATI. The romance is over...I'm giving in to the Dark Side.
PCe-16 slot...I can do SLi, but considering the 10' of joy I've had from Crossfire, I'm reluctant.
Board is a Asus A8R-32 MVP (great board, btw).
Sooo...8600GT? Or should I get cocky and go for 8800GT?
Playing mostly WoW, though that'll change now that I have UT3 installed, and someone tells me UT 2007's been released (damn I forgot how much I love that game).

Welllll...
...it looks like idiot me added an extra drive to the system and, quite simply, I've overloaded the power supply. I'm runing an Antec NEO HE 550 against:
AMD 64 X2 4800+
2-X1900XTs (Crossfire)
2-37Gb WD Raptors
1-320Gb Seagate SATA
1-DVD-RW
1-DVD-ROM
1-USB keyboard, 1-Logitech MX1000 & 1-Nostromo n52
The Seagate apparently is the problem...I had the same setup under XP without issue, but added the Seagate as a System drive, and the 2 Raptors as a Software RAID-0 array for games/performance. According to a great util in ASUS' Support site (helps to determine power reqs for a system, I'm under by 250w. oops. Even the ATI tech blanched (verbally) as I listed the components, and agreed adding the Seagate probably did it. Ah well....
WID: FYI, I did check Tom's Hardware, digging out Light's thread about his 7900 return (BBJ's link), and found to my surprise the X1900X/XTX is still considered a powerful combo whether single or in Crossfire (and absolute monster in Crossfire mode), which was a shock.
Do note that I can't use PCIe 2.0 on this board, which negates the 8800...so I'd have to go back to the 8600s to get anywhere, in which case I may as well upgrade the power supply. Another $200...oy.

Yeah, lemme know. Tom's hardware's April recommendation was an 8600GTS...though the x1900XTX (in Crossfire mode) blows pretty much everything but the latest NVidia stuff in SLi....so it's a tug-of-war...do I spend $150 on a new PSU, knowing that should solve the problem? Or bite the bullet and go with the 8600GTS? The current PSU can handle it all. Argh! Decisions!
Update: Finally got Mindgate to download (use the Midwest servers, as LT suggested), installed...fun game. i had another in mind...this is the PS2 game that was ported. Fun tho'.
Noted a LOT of shuddering textures, which indicates the GPU is being underpowered...so PSU here I come!
Quick note to buyers...I've found ZipZoomFly.com has cheaper prices on the same PSUs Newegg sells. Everything else Newegg reigns, pricewise.
