I have a friend who's making money doing it and it's paying off after a year or so.
I would love to hear from anyone who's tried it and stopped, thought about it and changed their mind, went for it and no longer have a day job, etc.

Like any other consulting career, you'll have a job if you get into it because it's mostly black magic and hard to quantify. Everything takes time to work, so even if you have no idea what you're doing, you'll be a few months in before "just give it time" starts to wear thin.

There are a handful proven things that work in SEO\SEM, and the rest is voodoo. A big complication is steering clear of practices that will get a site blacklisted.
SEO, by its nature, is gaming the system, and the major search providers are constantly working to weed out sites that game the system excessively. As a result, the playbook is constantly changing, and the search engines aren't exactly open about the specifics. Hence the voodoo.

and I obviously don't have a lot of time to devote to it or I would have read this post a few weeks ago.
Thanks a million Rev. I couldn't get the skinny like that from any other source but the Posse.
