I have a friend who's making money doing it and it's paying off after a year or so.
I would love to hear from anyone who's tried it and stopped, thought about it and changed their mind, went for it and no longer have a day job, etc.

There are a handful proven things that work in SEO\SEM, and the rest is voodoo. A big complication is steering clear of practices that will get a site blacklisted.
SEO, by its nature, is gaming the system, and the major search providers are constantly working to weed out sites that game the system excessively. As a result, the playbook is constantly changing, and the search engines aren't exactly open about the specifics. Hence the voodoo.
