Are any speed benefits derived from using the standard IDE interface compared to the Promise Raid controller with only one HD installed? (please be specific)

Only if the ATA spec for the regular controller is lower than the drive you are trying to support and the raid controller is not.
ie: Maxtor ATA 133 drive
Standard crontroller is ATA 66/100
Raid controller is ATA 133
The benifit is small, but there is some.
