OK, just so I know.

XP uses HPFS like NT, right? That is superior to using FAT32.

If I get a large drive (like the stripped 160GB monster I'm looking at for my new system) how should I partition it?

When I was doing NT admin, I would set up a partition for the OS, then a large one for data. I've noticed though that games and programs seem to work better if you allow them to install in their default directory. This usually means a large C: drive. Will this hurt my performance?

Before you ask, I do file scan and defrag twice a week.

I am pretty sure you want to do a HPFS. I did a that becase it says to if you have a HD over something like 20 or 30 gigs. I have a 60. XP recomends it.

i believe HPFS is the old file system for OS/2, ive never heard of anyone using that on XP

i use NTFS because i had trouble with boot sector corruption with fat. XP doesnt seem to like running off of a fat partition. fat also has a problem with partitions or drives over 60gb

i use 120gb drives and partition them in a 40/80 split running ntfs. i put only programs that must be reinstalled after formats on my OS partition. data and format independent programs on my non OS partition.

i like the partitioned drive setup because it does shorten the downtime and reinstallation hassles during a reformat. i am going to start using ghost, so that may make that irrelevant.

one nice side benefit of partitioning a big drive, is that i can defrag the OS partition alot quicker than i would be able to do a whole drive, and keeping the data partitions defraged is not quite as important as keeping your OS partition in top shape.

letting a program choose its partition, is irrelevant because all install programs always look for the root partition, but yes i do believe some do better on the OS partition, especially when dealing with anticheat software.

mostly tho, i have never seen a performance difference from where you install a program.

You do mean NTFS ;)

And i dont partition my drives at all. boty my 60's are open, single partitions.

I use DriveImage... similar to Ghost, but I like it better then Ghost personally.

Its good shit. Really cuts down, downtime during a drive failure/replacement
